Sanket's Review: “The Shaukeens” is not just low-brow; it is a new category of embarrassment.

Cast: Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Piyush Mishra, Akshay Kapoor, Lisa Haydon
Director: Abhishek kapoor
Length: 2hrs and 5 mins

Three lecherous men in 60s trying to woo a hottie in Mauritius…okay, we knew this, but I never knew that such an interesting plot can be used with such laziness. The writer of the film, if there was any, couldn’t even bring one nice scene in the whole film that you can remember after the film is over. The feeling after the film got over was something that I cherished the most- and perhaps, that’s the only best part about spending my money on this film.

The film has no plot to speak off, and even the introduction to each of the three oldies is so preposterous and overdone, that you begin to lose interest quite early in the film that seemed 3hrs long even if it was just 2hrs. Very handful of laughs and that’s it in the first half. The film is more shocking as it came from the man who made delicious little film called “Tere Bin Laden”. Constant referring to body parts, which was more of vulgarity, which I wouldn’t have mind had it been even modicum-level funny. But THE SHAUKEENS is simply boring and boring, and more boring!

Even the second half of the film is entirely mind numbing with new addition of irritation with Lisa Haydon’s character going mad for Akshay Kumar. The only scene that had a mild impression on me is when Akshay Kumar is trying to give some bewildering expressions to an over-ambitious Bengali film-maker. It’s funny, but not hilarious. The film has a very convenient climax and it actually energizes you, not for its content, but for a fact that its on the verge of ending.

The songs are so pointless in the film that it’s funny! It wouldn’t have bothered had there been a single catchy number, but boy oh boy, the noisy songs tests your endurance more than the scenes. Even an otherwise beautiful Mauritius looks unexciting- I would guess the makers hardly had any hard-core passion to make this film, because it clearly shows lack of every basic nuance. It’s a film where everything went terrible.

The biggest disappointment of the film is the performances. It takes me lot of pain to say that someone like Annu Kapoor gives an abysmal performance. His character is most frivolous but he fails to get that right and it ends up being a tasteless performance. Anupam Kher too doesn’t have anything in the film that can be boasted of. Piyush Mishra must sack the guy who ideated that he should have such stammering diction- I mean come on, you don’t need gimmicks in such films where the plot itself could have been heroic. May be the reliance on the plot gave the director over-confidence which results in a banal film and easily the worst of the year so far. It must be a really trashy performance to be bored by someone as stunning as Lisa Haydon. Akshay Kumar in an extended cameo does a decent job, but not good enough to save the film from disgrace.

Even with lowest of expectations if “The Shaukeens” could cringe me, then it must be some real disaster. It’s not just a low-brow comedy, it is a new category of embarrassment.
